Note from the Pastor

“The ordinances of Yahweh are true and righteous altogether.  More to be desired

are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings

of the honeycomb..”  (Psalm 19:9-10).

I’ve always responded to this message with pious agreement.  Of course, I ought to desire God’s laws and ordinances, craving them like the sweet honey.  But I don’t really.  For me, the word “law” always brings to mind piles of dusty legal briefs and lawyers making dry arguments before an unsmiling judge.  How could that possibly be more appealing than a big bowl of ice cream, or a piece of apple pie?!

Then, this past Sunday, we watched “Chocolat” – a movie which would provoke chocolate cravings in even the most devoted dieters.  As we watch the movie, though, we come to understand that the chocolate represents something more profound than physical appetite alone.  It represents the heart’s desire.  The movie argues that it is our desire which connects us to God.  Therefore our expression and fulfillment of desire are the only things God’s law requires of us.  God’s law – which calls us to love and freedom, healing and reconciliation, power and courage.  The very things we most want to be, the very things our heart calls us to be, that is what God’s law is trying to accomplish in us.

So it turns out that God’s law is really just an invitation to a great feast.  This holiday season may we be reminded of the blessings of that feast – as we relish the faithfulness of family and friends, as we sample the beauty of sparkling lights and snow, and as we drink in the warmth and hospitality of a crowded kitchen.  May we spend less time worrying about accomplishing a multitude of small tasks; and instead just remember to open our mouths, to receive the sweetness of God’s love-law, tasting it carefully and allowing it to slowly melt on our tongues.

World Needs

Christmas shopping can be an opportunity not only to give to those you love, but also to give to the greater world.  Purchase gifts from fair trade organizations, which promote social and economic justice for artisans in impoverished countries.  Our own Gift Shop carries items from SERRV, one such organization.  (You can find an even wider selection – including chocolate! – by checking out their website: www.serrv.org.)  If you like to shop in Rochester, check out the “One World Goods” shop in the Pittsford Plaza on 3349 Monroe Ave. – which carries items from Ten Thousand Villages (www.tenthousandvillages.ca) another fair trade organization.  Or you might get a little more creative, making a donation of a goat or a flock of chickens through Heifer International (www.heifer.org), which provide livestock for rural communities, helping them develop sustainable agriculture.  This Christmas let us fill our gift-giving with the spirit of the greatest Gift-Giver, who has blessed us abundantly, and who asks us to remember our kinship with each other and with the world.

CT Gift Shop Hours:  Thursday and Fridays from 11 AM to 4 PM

Sign up in the Narthex to work a 2 ½ hour shift.

The shop is in the process of “Going out of Business”

Stewardship Thought

Be a Participant – Not a Spectator

Is the sole role of your church to serve you or are you suppose to provide service to your church?  Well, let us see if the Bible has an answer to this question.  How about the verse in Matthew 20:26-28, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many.”  Or in John 12:26 we read, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.  My Father will honor the one who serves me.”

Jesus served us

The lesson is quite clear that Jesus served us by dying on the cross for us and He asks us to serve others in return.  We are to live a life of serving because the Chief Servant has served us.  Service done at your church, in the community and in the world for the benefit of all of God’s creatures and creation is part of our total stewardship of life.  The use of talents, gifts and skills for the well being of others is a habit that leads to spiritual maturity.

The church serves you

Your church serves you through its worship services and the many programs it provided for you and you in return are expected to reciprocate by participating in the operation of the church.  George Barna writes in his book “The Habits of Highly Effective Churches” that “Highly effective churches agree that ministry is not the domain of spectators; it must be populated by activists.  Rather than allow people to simply come, watch and give money at ministry events, great churches make it clear that you cannot be part of the real church unless you gat involved.”

We serve the church

Churches have a myriad of opportunities for involvement.  There is something for everyone.  There is a job for everyone for we all have God given gifts (Romans 12:6-8) that can be put to work.  I agree with George Barna’s comment that “To be a part of church, you must be involved for then there is no uncertainty about expectations nor any value associated with “Spectator Christianity.”

Don’t be a spectator; use your gifts to provide a service to your church!

                                                            Balance as of 9/1/02    2,250.74

Monthly Payment $504.00

Our Goal is to have the loan repaid early in 2003.  If you would like to give a donation please send it to the church designated for the Building Loan Payment.

RECAP: $25,000 was borrowed from the Board of Church Extension in November 1998 to make improvements to the church & Parsonage.  We installed the pew cushions, bought the multimedia projector & screen, and replaced the outdated mimeograph machine in the office with a digital duplicator.  This is similar to a copier but costs a lot less to make greater quantities of copies, for the bulletin and newsletter.  We refurbished our Chapel with paint and new furniture.   We also installed a chimney insert in the Parsonage fireplace. Several other small projects were completed also.
